This Fire Weather Index page contains a new Fire Weather Index: pwsFWI. Designed for Personal Weather Stations to behave on local meteorology with a validity range which varies because of that locality. In mountainous areas it may vary from one valley to another, on flat, hilly, low mountainous inland area, the range can extend to 200 km.

The theory behind is published on the accompanying blog. Possible changes and / or further development will be published there and you can follow it with the tag FWI or subscribe to the blog.

Currently the pwsFWI is in the phase of behavioural and technical testing. In the mean time, until further notice, this page and the results displayed here are provisional.

Copyright is here. For more info you can check the blog or contact Hans Rottier.

(*) FWIcalc, to which I owe a lot of inspiration, has been developed (from 2002 to 2014) by Graeme Kates in New Zealand on the basis of the FWI (Fire Weather Index), developed in Canada and also used in New-Zealand and France. Some other indices like the Angstrom and the CBI (Chandler Burning Index) are calculated by FWIcalc as well. The software is no longer supported but can still be downloaded and used (freeware).
